Australian Tourism Highlights

  • International travel to Australia increased 4.9% in the year ending March, with 6.2 million visitors to our shores1.
  • Outbound travel by Australians increased at a slower rate, up 4.2% over the same period to reach 8.3 million departures – leaving Australia a 2.1 million tourist deficit.
  • Meanwhile, domestic overnight travel by Australians aged 15 and above increased slightly, up 1.8% to 74.6 million trips. Day trips grew at a moderate rate of 2.5% to 170.5 million2.
  • The latest forecasts anticipate slower growth in 2013-14, with international arrivals up 4.2% and domestic overnight trips up 1.5%3. Outbound travel by Australians is expected to grow at a slightly faster rate, up 4.7%.
